{"id":609,"date":"2025-01-13T01:48:51","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T01:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mylegacyden.com\/joedifalco\/dave-tyburskis-guide\/"},"modified":"2025-01-13T01:59:22","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T01:59:22","slug":"dave-tyburskis-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mylegacyden.com\/joedifalco\/dave-tyburskis-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Dave Tyburski\u2019s guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Step-by-step Process for Applying to an Open Job<\/u><\/p>\n<p>NOTE:\u00a0 Prior to any job search you must do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss your want\/need for a job search with significant other, family, friends, dependents, etc.\n<ul>\n<li>Topics such as salary, benefits, location, transportation, day-care, vacation, job responsibilities, etc should be covered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open a free LinkedIn account if you don\u2019t have one already.\n<ul>\n<li>Your LinkedIn account should read as a CliffNote-version of your resume.<\/li>\n<li>Send requests to everyone you know in and out of the industry.<\/li>\n<li>More potential employers are sourcing candidates from LinkedIn rather than spend thousands for Monster, Dice, CareerBuilder, etc\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>LOCK DOWN YOUR FACEBOOK, MYSPACE OR ANY OTHER SOCIAL NETWORK, BLOG, ETC\u2026SITE PRIOR TO JOB SEARCH!!!!!!!!!!\n<ul>\n<li>I can\u2019t express this point enough.<\/li>\n<li>Even your profile picture could be \u201coffensive\u201d to someone\u2026even if it was a sweet little girl holding a puppy.<\/li>\n<li>Google yourself to find any other material in cyberspace that may prevent you from getting an interview\/job.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Without further ado\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find opportunity via\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indeed.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indeed.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linkedin.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theladders.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theladders.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pghtech.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pghtech.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Company\u2019s direct website.\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure to check the company\u2019s website regardless, so you can research the organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Customize resume to job description\n<ul>\n<li>Take note of individual \u201crequirements\u201d as they are mostly written in order of importance\n<ul>\n<li>Your resume should reflect this order<\/li>\n<li>Do not embellish or fabricate\n<ul>\n<li>You can count on having questions asked pertaining to every item in your resume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Resume layout <u>with<\/u> experience:\n<ul>\n<li>Summary\n<ul>\n<li>Make this short, sweat, to the point. Taylor to each job you are applying for.<\/li>\n<li>Summary of skills\n<ul>\n<li>6 to 8 bullet points spread across two columns<\/li>\n<li>Bullets should pertain to description of job you are applying for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professional Experience\n<ul>\n<li>Use month\/year start\/end date<\/li>\n<li>Chronological method with most current position first<\/li>\n<li>Toot your horn with your experience\n<ul>\n<li>Be selfish. Use \u201cI\u201d, \u201cMe\u201d, \u201cMy\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Resume length should apply to scale below\n<ul>\n<li>20+ years of experience should encompass 3 \u2013 4 pages<\/li>\n<li>7 \u2013 20 years: 2 \u2013 3 pages<\/li>\n<li>2 &#8211; 7 years: 2 pages<\/li>\n<li>1 &#8211; 2 years: 1 page<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Education\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>&lt;School Name&gt;, &lt;city, state&gt; &#8211; Degree, Major\n<ul>\n<li>Only see GPA if overall score is 4.0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Certifications\n<ul>\n<li>Type<\/li>\n<li>Date acquired<\/li>\n<li>Cert # if applicable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>DO NOT attach references<\/u><\/strong>!\n<ul>\n<li>These can be used by the company or staffing firm you are applying to, to identify more candidates for the position you are going for.<\/li>\n<li>Have them ready to send when asked during the interview process\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure to have recently spoken with your references to ensure they will give positive feedback of your professional experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Apply online\n<ul>\n<li>Double check your electronic resume document for typos.<\/li>\n<li>Have someone else review it as a triple check.<\/li>\n<li>Only add cover letter if \u201crequired\u201d<\/li>\n<li>DO NOT submit salary requirements unless \u201crequired\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>If \u201crequired\u201d, mark up your current compensation by 5-10%.<\/li>\n<li>5-10% is a realistic bump, unless you feel that you are tremendously below market value.<\/li>\n<li>Identify the Hiring Manager and\/or the H.R. manager<\/li>\n<li>Network! Network!\u00a0 Network!<\/li>\n<li>Research LinkedIn\n<ul>\n<li>You may know someone in common<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Company\u2019s website<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Contact Hiring Manager and\/or HR Manager\n<ul>\n<li>Call (if you have the number) within 24 hours of submitting resume online\n<ul>\n<li>State \u201cI apologize for the interruption, but I recently applied to the xxxx position I found posted on xxxx and just wanted to make sure you are in receipt of my resume.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>If no answer on first shot, leave a voicemail stating \u201cI recently applied to the xxxx position I found posted on xxxx and just wanted to make sure you are in receipt of my resume.
